Common problems we solve for Columbus homeowners.
Kitchen with no good gathering space or prep zone
A well-planned island becomes the heart of the kitchen. It's where homework happens, guests pull up a stool, and prep work gets done efficiently.
Layout that doesn't work for how your family uses it
Islands need proper clearance and sizing. We plan around your footprint and traffic patterns so the island helps instead of blocks.
Unsure about utilities, code requirements, or what's possible
Outlets, plumbing rough-ins, cooktops, ventilation — we coordinate all of it so the island is built right the first time.

Islands change how your kitchen works
A well-designed kitchen island transforms how your family uses the space. It’s the prep zone, the breakfast spot, the homework desk, and the gathering point during parties. We design seating islands, work islands, and everything between — matching your existing cabinetry, planning waterfall countertop edges, and engineering electrical and plumbing rough-ins where needed.
Seating vs work islands
The first design question is how you’ll use it. See our seating vs work island guide for a full comparison, but the short version:
- Seating islands prioritize a bar overhang for stool seating. Great for casual dining, homework, and entertaining. Usually 42 inches deep or more to accommodate seating.
- Work islands prioritize prep space, storage, and often a sink or cooktop. Deep counters, deep base cabinets, no overhang.
- Hybrid islands combine both — a wider footprint with prep space on one side and seating on the other. Best when your kitchen has the space.
| Island type | Priority | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Seating island | Bar overhang for stools | Casual dining, entertaining |
| Work island | Prep, storage, sink/cooktop | Serious cooks, extra counter space |
| Hybrid island | Both prep and seating | Larger kitchens with room to spare |
Sizing your island
Your island only works if the traffic around it works. Our sizing rules:
- Minimum island size — 3 feet by 4 feet. Below that, the island becomes an obstacle.
- Walkway clearance — 36-42 inches on working sides, 42+ inches on seating sides. If you can’t meet minimums, don’t force an island.
- Overhang — 12 inches minimum for casual seating, 15 inches for comfort. Support with corbels or steel brackets on longer overhangs.
- Height — 36 inches (counter height) or 42 inches (bar height). Counter-height is more common and works with regular kitchen stools.
Electrical and plumbing
Islands often need utility rough-ins, and those decisions have to be finalized before the island is built. We coordinate:
- Outlets — most codes require at least one outlet on any island above a certain size. We run these to code, with GFCI where required.
- Prep sinks — plumbing rough-in through the floor. Vented per code.
- Cooktops — 220V circuit or gas line depending on the appliance. Ventilation via downdraft or ceiling-mount hood.
- Task lighting — under-counter LEDs, pendant lights, or recessed lights above.
See our island electrical and plumbing guide for a fuller breakdown.
What drives island cost
Most islands are priced as a package: base cabinetry + countertop + install + any utility rough-ins. The main cost drivers:
- Size — bigger island, more material, more labor.
- Countertop material — quartz vs granite vs marble vs butcher block. Waterfall edges add 30-50% to countertop material.
- Storage complexity — drawers, pull-outs, pantry inserts add cost but often pay off in daily usability.
- Utility rough-ins — plumbing and electrical add both material and coordination cost.

Common questions about kitchen islands
How much clearance do I need around an island? +
Aim for 36-42 inches of walkway on all working sides. If the island seats guests, allow at least 42 inches on the seating side. Tighter clearances make the kitchen feel cramped; more space just wastes footprint.
Can my island have a sink or cooktop? +
Yes. We plan the plumbing or electrical rough-in before the island goes in. Prep sinks are a favorite — a great use of an island — and cooktops with downdraft ventilation work well when your ceiling can't support a traditional hood.
What's the deal with waterfall edges? +
Waterfall edges are mitered slab returns that carry the countertop down the sides of the island like a waterfall. They're a striking design element and popular in modern kitchens. They add material and fabrication cost — expect 30-50% more than a standard edge.
Fixed or movable island — which is better? +
Fixed islands are the standard when you want utilities (outlets, sink, cooktop), heavy stone tops, or a permanent design element. Movable islands (butcher block on wheels) work in smaller kitchens where flexibility matters more than fixed features.
How long does island installation take? +
Standalone island installations run 2-3 days for standard builds. Islands with plumbing or electrical rough-ins take longer, and waterfall countertops add 1-2 weeks to fabrication. We'll give you a firm timeline after the consult.
